The 186g Titanium Plate That Made Me Stop Using My Camp Bowl as a Dinner Plate
Делиться
For years, my camp dinnerware logic was simple: bring one bowl, use it for everything. Pasta, stew, oatmeal, rehydrated meals — it all went into the same deep vessel. It worked. It was efficient. But it was also joyless. Eating a properly grilled steak or a pile of sliced fruit out of a bowl feels like eating with the wrong tool, even when the food is good.
So when I started using the Boundless Voyage Ti1149T 27cm square titanium plate, the thing I wanted to find out wasn't whether titanium was light. I already knew that. The real question was: does a large, flat, square plate earn its place in a pack that already has a bowl in it? After a few months of camp dinners, desk lunches, and one very good steak, the answer is more practical than I expected.
The square shape is the part that changes how you use it
A round camping plate is fine for a single serving of something wet. A 27cm square plate is a different tool entirely. The 27.7 × 18.4cm surface gives you corners and straight edges, which sounds like a minor geometry detail until you actually use it. A steak fits without hanging over the edge. A pile of sliced vegetables and a separate stack of flatbread can sit on the same plate without touching. You can use one corner for salt, another for a sauce, and still have the center free for the main event.
The 1.9cm depth is the other quiet design decision that matters. It's deep enough to keep a juicy piece of meat or a wet side dish from running off the edge, but shallow enough that you can still cut on it without fighting a wall. I've used it for steak, pasta with a loose tomato sauce, and a full English-style camp breakfast. Nothing slid off. Nothing pooled at the rim.
186g is the right weight for the job — but not the weight some people expect
The spec sheet says 186g, which Boundless Voyage notes is about 40% lighter than a stainless steel plate of the same size. In hand, it feels almost implausibly light for something this large. You can hold it by one corner with two fingers and it doesn't flex into a taco.
But here's the honest part: a 27cm plate at 186g is not the lightest titanium plate you can buy. There are smaller, thinner plates that weigh closer to 100g or less. If your only goal is shaving grams, a smaller plate wins. The 186g is the weight you pay for the surface area — and the surface area is the entire point. This is a plate for people who want to eat properly, not just refuel.
One Amazon reviewer complained that the plate felt "heavy" and "a lot smaller than what they appear to be in the pictures." I understand the first complaint even if I don't share it — 186g is more than a flimsy plastic plate, and if you were expecting a featherweight, the number can surprise you. The second complaint is worth taking seriously: 27cm diagonal is not the same as 27cm of usable eating surface. The usable flat area is closer to a generous dinner plate than a serving platter. If you're picturing something you'd use to carve a whole chicken for four people, size down your expectations. If you're picturing a plate that comfortably holds a full meal for one hungry person, it's right.
Titanium does two things here that plastic and stainless steel can't
The first is flavor neutrality. Titanium is chemically inert, doesn't react with acidic foods like tomato sauce or lemon, and doesn't retain odors. I've eaten curry off this plate, rinsed it, and used it the next morning for fruit. No lingering spice smell. No metallic note. A plastic camp plate would have held onto that curry for days.
The second is cleanability. The surface is smooth and non-porous. Grease wipes off with a paper towel. Dried sauce doesn't bond to it the way it does to some coated plates. The crystallized silver finish in particular is described as fingerprint-resistant and exceptionally easy to wipe clean, and in practice, that holds up. It's the kind of plate you can clean with a splash of water and a thumb when you're tired and don't want to do dishes.
The trade-off is heat conduction. Titanium transmits heat fast. If you put a freshly grilled steak straight onto this plate, the surface under the meat will get hot within seconds. It's not a plate you hold in your lap with hot food on it. Set it on a table or a flat surface and eat from it there. This is true of every thin titanium plate, and it's worth knowing before you pick it up bare-handed.
It's a plate, but it's also the tray you didn't pack
The 27cm square format is what makes this plate do more than one job. I've used it as a tea tray when I didn't want to balance a gaiwan on a rock. I've used it as a fruit platter for a group. I've used it as a prep surface for slicing vegetables before they went into the pot. The product listing itself calls out tea tray, fruit platter, and storage tray as intended uses, and those aren't marketing stretch goals — they're the natural consequence of a large, flat, rimmed square.
For car camping and base camps, this is the plate that replaces a cutting board, a serving tray, and a dinner plate. For backpacking, it's a luxury item — but a small, stackable luxury that slides into a pack without adding bulk.
Who should buy it — and who should stick with a bowl
Buy it if: you're tired of eating real meals out of a deep bowl; you want a camp plate that can handle a steak, a pile of vegetables, and a piece of bread without spilling; you value a surface that wipes clean and doesn't hold onto the last meal's smell; or you want one flat piece of gear that doubles as a tray, prep surface, and serving platter.
Skip it if: you're counting every gram and a smaller, lighter plate fits your portion sizes; you expect a serving platter for a group (this is a generous single-serving plate, not a carving board); or you need a plate that stays cool to the touch with hot food on it.
At $20, it's priced like a useful tool rather than a specialty item. It won't replace the bowl for wet meals. But it has already replaced everything else I used to put a real dinner on at camp.
